Domestic VIP visits & major events

The Australian National University hosts numerous official VIP visitors each year from across Australia and around the world.

Visits from international delegations or Ambassadors are coordinated by the VIP Visits and Protocol Officer in International Strategy & Alliances.

Find out more about official visits.

VIP visits

Domestic VIP visits include all visits to campus by senior public servants, Chancellors, Vice-Chancellors, high profile academics, chairpersons/chief executive officers of major organisations and significant members of the public.

Major events

Major events are functions that may involve VIPs and attract significant media and/or public interest.

University Protocol

Where the Vice-Chancellor, distinguished guests or media are involved, it is essential that certain requirements are met and that Strategic Communications and Public Affairs is informed.

Invitations to Members of Parliament to attend any University event must be issued by the Vice-Chancellor. This also applies if the Vice-Chancellor is expected to have a significant role or to host the event.

Services provided by Strategic Communications and Public Affairs

The role of the Communications Officer (Special Events) is to manage domestic VIP visits, especially those involving the Vice-Chancellor, and to advise on protocol issues relating to VIP events on campus.

How SCAPA can help with your visit or event:

  • Invite VIP guests through the Vice-Chancellor
  • Extend invitations to guests and manage RSVPs
  • Issue media releases and manage journalists’ enquiries
  • Venue advice and bookings
  • Determine catering, photography, recording and AV requirements and contact relevant people on campus
  • Determine if others are required to be invited to attend
  • Marketing and advertising strategies
  • Advise ANU Security
