As part of National Psychology Week, ANU and 666 ABC Canberra have teamed up to present an interactive public forum this Thursday, where six experts will seek to shed light on an age-old question – ‘What’s wrong with our teenagers?’
The forum will be streamed live on the Internet, be interactive through Twitter and has a series of YouTube video interviews with the panel members. Watch live from 6pm tonight: http://www.livestream.com/ANUCHANNEL
It will bring together six experts to discuss psychological and social problems affecting teenagers, including body image issues, popularity, relationships, smoking, drinking and social engagement. The event is aimed at teenagers, parents of teenagers and those that work with teenagers and will give down-to-earth advice and information about the issues.
It has been organised in partnership with 666 ABC Canberra and will be moderated by Afternoons’ Presenter Genevieve Jacobs.
The panel will be made up of Professor Don Byrne, Director of the School of Health and Psychological Sciences, Professor Larry Saha from School of Social Sciences, Clinical Psychologist Antoinette Harmer, PhD students in Psychology Jessica Wilson and Stephanie Hawke and 666 ABC Canberra Youth Panellist Charlie Wood.
Professor Byrne said the forum was a unique opportunity to shed light on some troubling issues for Canberra parents and teenagers.
“The teenage years can be very difficult, both for teenagers and their parents,” he said.
“There are a wide range of issues that teenagers can come up against, and it happens at a time when young people are often struggling to find their place in the world. That can be very confusing and difficult for teenagers, and hard to understand for their parents.
“This forum is a great way to talk about those problems and throw some light on what we know about them, from a psychological and social perspective. We’re aiming to provide advice and information that will be useful to everyone, and communicate what we know academically to a wider audience,” he said.
The event will be streamed live on the internet this Thursday at 6pm. Come back to this page on Thursday for the link. You can also interact on Twitter, posting comments or questions with the tag #ANUwwwt. The best questions and comments on the night will be asked at the event.
Additionally, a range of interviews with panel members have been recorded and are available for viewing at the new ANU YouTube Channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/ANUchannel
