Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Chubb and ACT Chief Minister Jon Stanhope have turned the first sod at the site of the new building that will house the ANU Climate Change Institute.

The new building will bring together over 90 researchers from across the University to work on tackling the complex and interdisciplinary problems presented by climate change.

The ACT Government has pledged to contribute $2.5 million towards the $8.1 million building that will be also house parts of the Fenner School of Environment and Society.

Professor Chubb welcomed the support from the ACT Government and said that climate change researchers would benefit by being able to work together in the same building.

“We are grateful for the support from the ACT Government and the serious demonstration of their commitment to climate change research and education,” Professor Chubb said.

“Climate change is an issue that reaches across a number of disciplines be they science, social sciences, health or economics. This new building will create a central hub for many tens of people from around the University working on finding solutions to the big climate change issues.”

Mr Stanhope said that the ACT Government was pleased to commit $2.5 million toward the establishment of a new research institute that would aid the University in its ambition to find climate change solutions.

“The ACT Government is serious about climate change and the challenges that it presents,” he said.

“We have opportunities to lead and responsibilities to engage the community in understanding the realistic challenges of climate change. To that end, we recognise and identify the need for good research and where better to turn than Australia’s best University.
